Top hairstyles for a night out

A special night on the town deserves a fantastic new hairstyle.  From hot party hair to something sweet and sexy, the possibilities are endless and easy to achieve at home.

The bun

The classic bun is making a huge comeback this year, and there are plenty of ways to wear it.  Perhaps the best thing about a bun is that it’s super simple to do at home, without the intervention of a professional stylist.

First, pull hair back into a ponytail.  Set the ponytail high on the head for a more dramatic look, or place it lower near the nape of the neck for a romantic chignon.  Then just wrap the hair around itself, securing sections into place with hairpins.  For a sleek look, smooth your hair back and secure the ponytail tightly, and be sure to tuck in any loose ends as the hair is wrapped around the elastic.  For a more relaxed look, pull your hair into a loose ponytail and allow a few tendrils to fall, framing the face.  Stray ends that pop out as the hair is pinned help create a slightly messy, yet very sexy style.

Remember, when it comes to a bun, bigger is definitely better.  Those with short hair may wish to consider visiting their local hair extensions salon for temporary or permanent extensions that will make the hair longer to create a larger bun.

The braid

Braids aren’t just for schoolgirls anymore.  Celebs like Kirsten Dunst and Molly Sims favour this easy style, which can be dressed up for a night out or dressed down for daytime.

To make a braid extra special, try an up-do that incorporates a few plaits at the crown of the head or as a way to pull back long bangs.  Simply French braid the hair, starting with small sections just above one ear to keep the look manageable.  Then direct the braid around the crown of the head by grabbing larger sections until the plait reaches the opposite side of the head.  Secure with hairpins and smooth any fly-aways with hairspray, and then pull back the rest of the hair in a sexy up-do or chignon.

Those who have difficulty braiding their own hair can try a braided headband, which is made from synthetic hair and looks surprisingly like the real thing.

The bump

Serious volume at the hairline is seriously sexy.  Nicole Richie and Kim Kardashian have been rocking this style for months now, and it’s not too hard to achieve at home.

Lift a section of hair at the top of the head and tease the hair underneath that section with a comb, which gives the style a foundation that’ll last all night.  Gently backcomb strands over the teased hair to smooth it out, and then finish with extra hold hairspray.  Pin the sides or sweep the rest of the hair back into a sleek ponytail or low knot to complete the look.
