Marrakesh – bit of Eastern promise?

Sunbed, caipirinia, iPod, valid reason for a pedicure…..sound like what you need?

You don’t need any reminding that it’s a tad miserable in the UK at the moment, still no sign of light and spring seems like a far away dream. Need a break? Well we certainly do and top of our list is Marrakesh.

Even though it’s only a 4 hour flight away you could feel like you’ve whizzed back in time and it really is the destination with everything. A trip to the labyrinth like souk is obviously a pre-requisite but there is so much else to see.

After a hard couple of days haggling with the market vendors the perfect place to relax is to spend a day at Nikki beach. This private pool resort has just about everything you could need for a relaxed day of nothing. Laze on the leather day- beds or, if you’re with a group hire a private cabana with waiter service and sip cocktails until your heart’s content. With its own resident DJ you can even have a rave in the pool if the mood takes you!

If you’ve had enough with the lounging and shopping then take a day trip out to the Atlas Mountains. A private driver can cost as little as €50 per day and you’ll even stop off at a local Berber farmers house for some tea! The best time to go is at the weekends as the locals take their families out to the mountains for picnics so it’s a great way to sample local Moroccan life. If you get a chance stop off at one of the local oil factories – for a couple of euro you can buy a bottle of pure Moroccan cosmetic Argan oil which makes your skin feel like velvet!

Where to stay

Hotel AnaYela: boutique hotel in Marrakech, Medina

If you’re after a Riad with a story the AnaYela hotel is the place for you. Named after a girl who previously lived there, you can read the story of her intimate diary discovered in one of the buildings secret rooms…intriguing. Located in the midst of the Medina it’s the perfect base for serious souk shopping and night time meanderings and, as the Riad has only 3 rooms and 2 suites you’re guaranteed a personal experience.

Even though the number of rooms may be limited, the services certainly aren’t; they include a heated swimming pool, roof terrace bar with stunning views, in room massage, a restaurant and even an open air cinema. You might need longer than a weekend…..
